The Fourth of July started out very quite but as soon as one mutual aid call came in crews became tied up on another call. At 2202 hrs WMFD crews were dispatched to Caton for a Possible Evacuation because of a MVA that ruptured a Natural Gas Pipeline. One engine and manpower was requested to the scene. 1821 responded with 5 and 1872 responded with 3. Chiefs 1801, 1802, and 1803 also responded. While enroute units swithched to channel 2 to operate with Caton crews. During this time 1801 arrived at the scene of the evacuation with many State Police, Caton FD, and South Corning FD. Caton's Rescue then advised 1821 to establish a LZ for Guthrie 1 on the Kelly Rd. for a EMS call that Caton and Rural/Metro were also at. 1802, 1803, 1821, and 1872 established the LZ with Guthrie 1 circling above. Crews helped Guthrie, Caton, and Rural/Metro load the patient for transport. Crews cleared the LZ at 2303 hrs. Back at the station two crews were on stand-by for extra manpower if it was needed. 1801 cleared the staging area at 2352 hrs. and all units were back in service at 0000 hrs.

It started off Friday morning when tanker 1861 was dispatched mutual aid to Millerton for a structure fire. 1861 responded with a crew of three and chief 1801 also responded. First reports on scene were that the chimney had about 5 foot flames coming from it. Crews from Webbs Mills, Big Elm, and Millerton worked to extinguish the fire and clean the chimney so it would not catch fire again. The crews were on scene for bout an hour before clearing.

On Saturday two full crews did a pool fill for the whole day. Luckily the Junior firefighters were able to help out some by refreshing the firefighters who were working hard. They also learned about the importance of fill sites and engine company operations. 1861 delivered three loads of water and 1831 did about six in that day. Crews finished at 1700 hrs and the homeowner gave the department a donation for our work.

Sunday started off the usual but at 1700 hrs Webbs Mills crews were dispatched for a tanker and manpower to the scene of a structure fire in Dagget. 1861 responded after the dispatch was complete and 1831 w/ 6 responded just after 1861. 1801 arrived on scene and by the orders of Millerton's chief was told we could return to qaurters. Before we cleared our Tanker was then dispatched to stand-by at South Creek's Station who were also out on a structure fire. The fire they were out on was completely different from the initial one we were dispatched to. All units secured and returned at 2100hrs

On 04/22/10 at about 1400 hrs Webbs Mills crews were dispatced to Southport for a Tanker to the scene of a Brush Fire. 1861 responded with three personal and upon arrival found the Town of Southport's brush pile on fire. Pine City, Southport, and South Creek crews were already on scene fighting the fire. 1861 began to run tanker shuttles with South Creek and Pine City as Southport's engine pumped water to attack lines. Webbs Mills base was notified that additional man power was needed. 1871 with two and 1872 with three responded with wildland certified personal.

When these units arrived on the scene they relieved the current firefighters and assisted with the wetting down of hotspots. 1861 shuttled a total of five loads of water to the scene and crews assisted with mop up and were called back in service at around 1600 hrs.

The Kawasaki Mule was donated by Army Reserve Sergeant Chris Connelly, who is also a Webbs MIlls Firefighter. Sgt. Connelly is being deployed to active duty to Afghanistan and before his departure donated the Mule to the Strike Team to be utilized for wildland fire/rescue. The Mule (1874) has been equipped with brooms, rakes, shovels, and 30 gallons of water. This will serve as another valuable tool to help combat wildland fires that are not accessible with larger apparatus and it will help to transport firefighters more effectively. The Mule is available for any department requesting mutual aid and assistance. On behalf of the Webbs Mills Vol. Fire Dept. we would like to thank Sgt. Chris Connelly for his donation and wish him a safe deployment and return home form Afghanistan.

As of 2/22/10 all homes in New York State will be required to have carbon monoxide detectors in place.

There is an exception for homes that use combustion-free energy sources, like electric for heating and cooking.

The new law is named after Amanda Hansen, a 16-year-old from West Seneca who died in January 2009 because of a carbon monoxide leak from a defective boiler at a friend's house.

A carbon monoxide detector costs around $20 dollars, and sounds an alarm before dangerous levels of gas leak into your home. They can be found at most hardware or home improvement stores.

http://www.wetmtv.com/news/local/story/Amandas-Law-Takes-Effect-Monday/hncc98cDQkKSpGOWCCbnTA.cspx?rss=127
