As of 2/22/10 all homes in New York State will be required to have carbon monoxide detectors in place.
There is an exception for homes that use combustion-free energy sources, like electric for heating and cooking.
The new law is named after Amanda Hansen, a 16-year-old from West Seneca who died in January 2009 because of a carbon monoxide leak from a defective boiler at a friend's house.
A carbon monoxide detector costs around $20 dollars, and sounds an alarm before dangerous levels of gas leak into your home. They can be found at most hardware or home improvement stores.
